1. Ethan Choi

He might not have been the center of attention during Chicago Med season 4, but Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) came out of it as sort of the Most Valuable Player. Every time there was a big crisis, he was somewhere in the middle of it, and while everyone else’s lives were going upside down, he was often the voice of reason.

That’s not a huge surprise—the previous seasons established Choi as the character who could almost always keep a cool head no matter what. But that talent was particularly on display in this season. He had a semi-feature episode where an angry man confronted him in the Emergency Department and released a chemical that nearly killed him, which until that last part showed how calm Choi could be under pressure. He was the one calling the shots when a car crashed into the hospital.

And while the writers saddled him with a tedious storyline about his sister, her new boyfriend, and an unexpected baby, Choi even handled that well. Chicago Med had very odd moments where Choi was depicted as being too harsh because he expected better from Emily (Arden Cho) and Bernie (C.S. Lee), and that wasn’t fair—he was simply speaking the truth. That whole situation was a mess and he wasn’t afraid to call them on it.

Nor was he afraid to confront April (Yaya DaCosta) when it seemed like she was acting inappropriately. It was refreshing, and important to the show, to have somebody who thought with his head and not his heart. Chicago Med can get caught up in the emotion of its stories on occasion, and Choi balanced that out, while also once again being a valuable character whenever he needed to jump into action.
