2. Natalie Manning

Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) has always been somewhat of a polarizing character, due to how opinionated she can be. But Chicago Med took that to another level this season, in which she seemed to throw common sense out the window to do what she wanted—or maybe just for the writers to have a more dramatic storyline.

In the first part of the season, Natalie was surprisingly naive about what Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) was up to; the show dragged out her not knowing a bit longer than you’d think it would have taken her to start asking questions. Once she did know, then she was insistent that Will talk to her about it, when he could hardly process it himself.

But it was the second part of Chicago Med season 4 that saw Natalie veer off in a different direction, and one that was definitely frustrating. She embarked upon a creepy relationship with Phillip Davis (recurring guest star Ian Harding), despite the fact that his wife had just died and that his daughter was one of her patients.

Professionalism went out the window as Natalie was giddy about Phillip, and Will was the only person who even batted an eye at this. It felt like the writers just wanted to create a love triangle, no matter how uncomfortable it was.

Meanwhile as a doctor, Natalie continued her tendency to push her opinions on others. She went from arguing for telling people the truth in one episode, to arguing for not telling them the truth in the very next installment—different cases, of course, but it was weird that she seemed not to have any consistency to her point of view.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens next if she survives her season-ending predicament. Will she come back down to earth since it’s clear the show is ready to reunite Manstead?
