When will Law & Order: SVU season 21 premiere on NBC? The buzz is already building for the next season of the Dick Wolf series, as Special Victims Unit is reaching another milestone this fall with its 21st season.

It’s mind-blowing to think that the show has been on the air for more than two decades, but with a very loyal fan following and near-constant reruns on multiple other channels, it seems to have a permanent spot on NBC’s primetime schedule. Even though ratings flagged last season, the show was renewed fairly quickly this spring.

So when does SVU premiere? NBC unveiled its primetime schedule recently and confirmed that the new season begins on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. That’s the same night and time as last season, so nothing has changed on that front.

There will be some changes among the cast and crew. Philip Winchester was dropped from the cast, with Assistant District Attorney Peter Stone leaving town in last season’s finale. Meanwhile, Warren Leight has returned to be showrunner again, replacing Michael Chernuchin (who is now working on Wolf’s other series FBI).

And Special Victims Unit will have a new lead-in. Airing before it on Thursday nights will be a new comedy called Sunnyside, starring Kal Penn (Designated Survivor, House) as a disgraced New York city councilman who finds his calling working with aspiring American citizens.

But the SVU season 21 premiere is just over three months away, so fans don’t have to wait long for Olivia Benson to return.
