Mixed-ish, starring Chicago Fire’s Gary Cole, gets premiere date
Chicago Fire recurring guest star Gary Cole’s new sitcom Mixed-ish has a premiere date; find out when you can watch the ABC series.
Another One Chicago actor has landed a new series. Gary Cole, who’s recurred in the last two seasons of Chicago Fire as Fire Commissioner Carl Grissom, is starring in Mixed-ish this fall and the sitcom recently announced its debut date.
Mixed-ish is the second spinoff of ABC‘s critically acclaimed sitcom Black-ish. The series is a Black-ish prequel focusing on the childhood of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character Rainbow Johnson, who is played in the spinoff by Arica Himmel.
Gary Cole is listed as a series regular playing Harrison Johnson, who’s the father of Paul Johnson (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Bow’s grandfather.
ABC has announced Mixed-ish will premiere Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. Which, if you’re keeping score, is the same date and time as the second season of Dick Wolf‘s drama FBI.
The network also released a Mixed-ish trailer earlier this spring, which you can watch by playing the video below:
What does this mean for Gary Cole playing Grissom on Chicago Fire? Chances are, it will mean seeing less of him in season 8. Fans don’t know for sure if the character is even planned to be in next season, but have already seen how in-demand the actor is.
Derek Haas told us in December that Grissom was supposed to be in more episodes this season, but Cole was unavailable filming other projects—so the character of Jerry Gorsch, played by Steven Boyer, was created.

Since Cole has series regular status on Mixed-ish, that will obviously have to be his priority. That doesn’t mean he can’t come back to Fire; he was a regular on CBS‘s sitcom Fam this season and still showed up. But his schedule will be a little busier.
Gary Cole’s the latest One Chicago recurring cast member to find work elsewhere. Heather Headley has been cast as a regular on a new Netflix series, while Ian Harding is starring in an Amazon pilot.
