What happened

Will Halstead is a doctor, but he spent a fair amount of this Chicago Med season outside of the hospital, and some of it not even practicing medicine. Instead, he was wrapped up in a storyline that felt like it belonged on—and featured a semi-crossover with—Chicago PD.

Season 4 began with Will planning his wedding to Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), but things were derailed when the man whose venue they hoped to use was revealed as a gangster. Will was recruited by his brother Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and FBI agent Ingrid Lee (recurring guest star Anna Enger Ritch) to work undercover against Ray Burke, even while treating Burke’s heart problem.

In the midseason finale, he was nearly shot by one of Burke’s sons before Jay saved him at the last minute. However, since Will was now the only living witness against the Burke family, Jay and Lee sent him to witness protection on the same day he was supposed to marry Natalie!

Will spent a few months in Arizona before returning to Chicago, still upset about his near-death experience. Natalie became angry with him for not confiding in her, and eventually dumped him for Phillip Davis (recurring guest star Ian Harding). Lee harbored a secret crush on Will, but realized in the season finale that he was still in love with Natalie—who was injured when one of the Burkes hit Will’s car in another attempt to kill him.
