What happened

Maggie still didn’t have a lot of screen time this Chicago Med season, but give the writers credit: when they did use her, they found interesting and different things to do with her.

Professionally, a new and exciting direction opened up for Maggie’s career: she joined Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) as his nurse in the hybrid OR, meaning that audiences got to see her more hands-on, instead of primarily overseeing the ED. Maggie participated in some difficult surgeries, and discovered a new line of work she excelled at.

Chicago Med season 4 also continued to explore her past. In one episode, her transgender sibling (recurring guest star Alexandra Grey) returned, with an abusive boyfriend in tow. There was also a woman from Maggie’s youth who appeared at the hospital, ill and eventually in need of a kidney transplant.

Maggie took the brave step of donating her own kidney, even though that was against a direct order from Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson). But that led to an out of left field revelation to end the season: Maggie’s kidney had a tumor and she needed to get tested for breast cancer! Is the show about to make its charge nurse a cancer patient?
