Chicago Med season 4 character review: Maggie Lockwood

Our prognosis

The biggest question for Maggie Lockwood when Chicago Med returns is the cancer story. Where is the show trying to go with this? It was so surprising that it’s hard to tell. Is she going to spend next season fighting breast cancer? Or will the writers drop this like they’ve done with other plots between seasons, saying she tested negative or they caught it super-early and she’s fine now?

It’d be a slap in the face of cancer survivors if the writers dropped that in there just to brush it off next season. At the same time, having Maggie seriously deal with cancer opens up a whole can of worms, as it’s a storyline that the show would have to spend a significant amount of time on, to do it right. It would be something that would change her life forever and be something that she’d be affected by for the rest of her time on the show. That’s a big change to make.

It’s also not the only issue Chicago Med needs to address. The producers’ decision to axe Connor from the show affects her, too, because what’s going to happen to the hybrid OR? It looked like Maggie would have at least something new to do—but now that project might not exist anymore, so then is she back to being just the charge nurse? Maggie deserves to grow in some direction and it’s not clear where she can do that now.

Hopefully Chicago Med season 5 doesn’t start a downward slide for Maggie Lockwood, or send her back to being underused. Marlyne Barrett deserves more than that, as season 4 proved she has a lot more to offer the show than we’ve normally seen.
