Chicago PD season 6 character review: Kevin Atwater
Our prognosis
It’s hard to pin down an idea of where Atwater can go after season 6, because his character is so underused. It’s just impossible to tell if the show will continue to use him as a supporting player or give him another featured arc.
But if the writers want to build on what they did this season, it would be fantastic for Atwater to evolve into the contrary voice that will be missing within Intelligence after Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda)’s departure. It’s clear that Atwater has some concerns with the way things are done, and his uncanny ability to stay calm in almost every situation is a direct contrast to how intense Voight is. Kevin could provide balance that Chicago PD needs.
And with the drama of his ex-partner Kim Burgess’s (Marina Squerciati) personal life out of the way, how about more scenes between her and Atwater? Fans have wanted those for a while, and Burgess will need something more to do next season, too. She could always rely on Kevin as both a colleague and a friend, and having those two team up again would be more than welcome.
More than anything, this show just needs more of Kevin Atwater. He’s too good of a character to be sitting on the sidelines while the series focuses on Voight’s next nemesis or the new romantic issue of the season. If he’s going to be a main character, he deserves the screen time and the plot development that usually entails. More Atwater is better for everyone.
