Our prognosis

Daniel Charles’ future on Chicago Med looks really murky. On one hand, Oliver Platt is so good that the producers want to keep him around. On the other hand, the changes they’ve made to the show mean that his character is pretty much a third wheel.

The departure of Reese means no dedicated psychiatry storyline. And with the other cast changes, the series seems to be concentrating almost entirely on the Emergency Department, so fans will see more of trying to include Charles on the cases in the ED. Honestly, if Platt weren’t so brilliant an actor, it would have made more sense to drop Charles rather than the two characters the show did cut. If they’re looking for characters who’ve run out of storylines, he doesn’t have much.

What’s going to happen with Caroline? Will she go into remission again and they’ll live happily ever after? Or is the show going to take the easy way out, kill her and have more angst for Charles? It’d be a sad choice, but the One Chicago writers often like to pick the more dramatic option.

Or perhaps, could Charles become a sounding board for the myriad of personal problems that all of the other characters seem to have? With all of the trouble in their lives and relationships, they may want some therapy themselves. He could probably dispense some good advice. But the writers need to decide quickly in season 5 what they expect him to be now that they broke up his biggest storyline, and with it, his department.
