What it means

If you’re a Connor Rhodes fan, you have every right to be angry about Chicago Med season 4. It was a terrible season for his character, and then to add insult to injury, the announcement was made in April that he was being removed from the show altogether.

There’s nothing to blame here except the writing. The season started out promising with the idea of the hybrid OR, continuing to utilize Connor’s professional versatility and giving him a degree of authority that he well deserved. But then his plotlines got almost entirely one-dimensional, which is a bad idea no matter what the story itself is—even worse when it’s a character whose biggest strength is how many different things he can do.

Compounding the problem was that one storyline was his relationship with Ava. Suddenly, fans didn’t see Connor standing on his own; pretty much everything in his life was about her. And by making her a villain, the scripts went incredibly far, turning her into more of a caricature than a character. That, in turn, put Connor in the middle of drama that was less Chicago Med and more soap opera.

Colin Donnell did his absolute best with everything that he was given, no matter how out there it was (a fake kidnapping?). He’s always been great with showing the compassion and the strength that made Connor an excellent doctor. However, he deserved a lot more, and it’ll be difficult not to look back at this season and think that it could have been so much better. It certainly didn’t need to end with him leaving.
