Our prognosis

The good news for Ava fans is that Chicago Med has decided to bring her back for next season’s premiere in order to conclude her storyline. Of course, what’s that conclusion going to be? Will she finally get arrested since she almost certainly committed murder? She can’t possibly avoid getting in trouble yet again, can she?

It’s hard to tell. On one hand, the scripts made her pretty much irredeemable. On the other hand, the writers have established a precedent where Ava somehow gets away with everything. After all she’s done or been accused of doing, the fans want to see her held accountable, but there’s still a possibility that she won’t.

Still, her leaving the show is unfortunately for the best. With Connor being dropped as well, there’s no cardiothoracic surgery department on the show anymore, and one only has to look over at Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) to see what happens when Chicago Med only has one character of a particular discipline. It just doesn’t work. Without Connor, there’s no function for Ava, because she was never developed enough to stand on her own.

And unfortunately, because the two characters were tied so closely together, it’s possible that how badly things ended for Ava are the reason why Connor isn’t here anymore either. While the producers haven’t spoken about either decision, it’s hard to imagine that he’d still be leaving if he’d had a season that hadn’t been about his ex-girlfriend wreaking havoc throughout his life. His plot was all about Ava, and since Ava’s now gone, that affects Connor, too. At least both will get some kind of ending?
