Our prognosis

Since there wasn’t a Goodwin-centric storyline during Chicago Med season 4, it’s hard to predict what may be in store for her next season. The biggest question facing her doesn’t actually involve her directly. It’s what happens to Gwen—remember that not long before he was killed, Cornelius Rhodes (D.W. Moffett) revealed that her contract was about to expire?

If Gwen doesn’t come back to the hospital, that gets a huge problem out of Goodwin’s way. And it is certainly possible that her contract does end; her storyline feels like one that wrapped up pretty well this season, and Heather Headley has another project in the works. So Goodwin wouldn’t have to fight anyone for control of the hospital anymore.

But what happens after that? The “Sharon tries to deal with financial problems” storyline is now beyond played out. Will the absence of Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) affect her, since Goodwin previously talked about how Connor’s reputation brought people into the hospital and she once was thrilled about him being in a magazine article? She’d have to find someone else to promote.

There also hasn’t been much exploration of her personal life. There was her ex-husband, and then last season a friend whose son got into some trouble, but Chicago Med has done the “somebody from your past” storyline for a lot of characters. What about Sharon making a new friend or being able to go on a date? She has to move forward somehow, and it doesn’t seem like it’ll be at work.
