What it means

While Chicago Med gave April an awful lot of screen time this season, that came with the caveat that at times, it wasn’t necessarily the best writing for her. As we discussed in our breakdown of Choi’s season, it’s never good when the majority of a character’s storyline is about someone else. April was doing a lot, but she was doing a lot for Emily and Bernie. She wasn’t getting to do a lot for herself.

The writers also treated the April and Choi relationship similar to the Stella and Severide one over on Chicago Fire. They weren’t a couple for most of the season, but the writers constantly kept the topic at the forefront, making clear that they weren’t over each other. As a result, fans got to see either April being jealous over Choi’s renewed romance with Vicki Glass (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), or April butting heads with Choi for one season or another.

Last but not least, the tease that she was late on her cycle and could be pregnant felt thrown in just to add more drama to Chexton’s relationship. It even seemed a little insensitive, since April had gone through that heartbreaking miscarriage story before.

That’s not to say her entire season was a loss. At least April and Choi seemed to have gotten finished with everyone else’s drama and gotten back on the same page, and they can move on next season as a solid unit. It’d also be nice to see April move forward professionally, as that got sidelined with the whole Emily situation. She’s a veteran nurse now, and should start having a bit more to do at the hospital.
