Chicago Med season 4 character review: April Sexton

Our prognosis

April’s future begins and ends with one question: is she pregnant? If she is, that’s a big storyline that will need to be handled sensitively and thoroughly, given what she’s been through before and where she and Choi are at right now. They’ve just gotten back together; being parents would be a huge step, even for them.

If she’s not, how will Chicago Med address that? Will there be regret on anyone’s part? Will they start talking about wanting to have kids together? Or will the show brush that aside and not do anything with it? It wouldn’t be the first time a One Chicago cliffhanger ended up getting moved past by the time the next season started.

But there’s another question here: where is April going professionally? We haven’t seen her role evolve over the past four seasons. With Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) moving to the hybrid OR, it seemed like April might have an opportunity to take on more work, but now the hybrid OR might not exist anymore either. The nurses don’t have as interesting plots as the doctors, and that should change.

And speaking of siblings, what about April’s brother Noah? Roland Buck III only made a brief stop this season, and that was to pick up Sarah Reese’s (Rachel DiPillo) belongings. For someone who was once so close to her brother that it clouded her judgment, April hasn’t spent a lot of time with him recently, since the writers’ focus shifted to Choi and then to Emily. It would be valuable to bring Noah back, especially if April does end up expecting again, and he could be someone for her to lean on.
