2. They share the same character traits

Season 7 further deepened Sylvie and Matt’s relationship, partly by bringing to light how similar they are. They both exhibit exemplary morals, a “by the book” attitude, as well as immense compassion for the victims they help. Both Matt and Sylvie think things through too, which was put on display with Gabby’s season premiere goodbye.

Matt went back and forth on whether or not it was worth trying to keep his relationship with Gabby alive, asking Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) for advice. Meanwhile, Sylvie used her new partner Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) as a soundboard for her feelings surrounding the loss of her friend. Later on, Matt and Sylvie were seen contemplating how their lives should go after Gabby.

Perhaps the most damning piece of evidence in this specific situation came when Matt handed Sylvie a note from Gabby, which was a photo of the two paramedics with a simple “love you always” sentiment. This showed the characters vulnerability, as they both were grieving the loss of their partner (in life and work, respectively).

The above scene allowed for Matt and Sylvie to later discuss their feelings surrounding Gabby’s departure – remember Sylvie’s telling: “If you wake up at 3:00 am and you need to talk, I’ll keep my ringer on?” It showed that trust was beginning to form in their friendship, which allowed for it to potentially grow more serious.
