In this article, we’re profiling Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt).

Where we left off

Daniel Charles started last season on a down note, as Chicago Med wrote out his student and his surrogate daughter Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo). Reese blamed Charles for not telling her that her estranged father was a murderer, and left Chicago to finish her residency in Texas. Losing her caused Charles to lash out once, but otherwise, Reese was hardly mentioned again—and things seemed quickly back to normal for the show’s now-only psychiatric expert.

With Reese gone, there were less psych storylines and more of Charles being a supporting player, offering his experience to consult on other people’s cases. But while he had a smaller role inside the hospital, the writers filled the extra time with a personal story for him.

His ex-wife Caroline (recurring guest star Paula Newsome) came to the hospital to get into a new clinical trial for her cancer, and in the process Charles fell head over heels in love with her again! it got to the point that when he thought she was leaving the city, he tried to get her a job so she’d stay, and then was prepared to resign to follow her. But Caroline dropped a bombshell: she’d lied because her health was getting worse.

Chicago Med season 4 ended with Charles and Caroline getting remarried, though her health is an issue that they’ll have to deal with in season 5.
