What should happen

We’ve almost certainly discussed this before, but Sharon Goodwin’s role on Chicago Med is a bit limited because of her job title. Every TV show has the supervisor character whose primary role is to give orders to the heroes or deal with their actions, and so that character usually doesn’t get a lot of screen time or storylines.

That’s not necessarily a writer problem—if you have a character who isn’t where the action is, then that character isn’t around for a lot of the episode. Or season. Or sometimes even series. It’s a logistical consequence of having that character type, especially if you decide to make them a main character, like Goodwin is.

With that in mind, there are ways for Goodwin to have more to do in Chicago Med season 5, to an extent. Her one big moment (which you can watch again by playing the video above) proves that she has more to offer than being in board meetings or chastizing doctors. Especially since the new season is shifting focus to the Emergency Department, get Goodwin downstairs more. She used to be a nurse; she can (and has) pitched in on cases.

Obviously she can’t do that every week, but maybe she decides to be more hands-on. Maybe it’s a result of the ED being short-staffed. Even if the writers have to stretch plausibility a time or two to make that happen, One Chicago fans will likely accept the dramatic license if it means Goodwin is more developed this season.
