What will happen

It’s kind of telling that if you go to the Chicago Med YouTube channel, there’s only one highlight in all of season 4 that centers on Goodwin. The writers just haven’t had as much for her to do, and it seems like it’s a combination of the logistics we just mentioned and their being content with what her current role is.

There was potential to do a lot more last season between Goodwin and Gwen Garrett (recurring guest star Heather Headley), but that never happened and it might not this season either, since Gwen’s contract was up and Heather Headley filmed a pilot for another TV series. So Sharon’s primary foil is gone; who will the writers play her off of instead?

It’s safe to expect more scenes between Goodwin and Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt). The show loves to write them together, given the characters’ long-standing friendship and how they both don’t always fit in other people’s stories. Thus if both need screen time, it’s easier to put them in a scene together. And it’s worked, because Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson are genuinely good as a unit.

We’re not anticipating much more than that for her individually, though she’ll still be there to keep the doctors and nurses in line, and be the person who talks about the hospital’s board or its issues financially or whatever the next extraneous problem is. Chicago Med feels like it will do more of the same with Goodwin, since there’s no real pressure or need to do anything different.
