What will happen

As far as Maggie’s health goes, Chicago Med could go either way. The season 4 finale showed that the writers will throw in all kinds of plot developments for dramatic purposes, while they may also abandon the idea of her having cancer if they’ve come up with something better since then. Fans can only hope that she ends up with a clean bill of health.

So then what about her career? It depends on who ends up running the hybrid OR. If it’s one of the main characters, then Maggie would absolutely stick around and keep helping them. If the place is taken over by somebody like Emergency Department boss Dr. James Lanik (recurring guest star Nate Santana), then she’ll likely end up getting bounced back to strictly being the charge nurse, as Lanik wouldn’t be liable to want her around and she wouldn’t be inclined to work with him, either.

That’d be a shame, because of all Chicago Med‘s characters, Maggie has had the least evolution. She keeps the ED running and is there to break up bickering, and occasionally gossip with Natalie or the other characters, but she’s to the nurses what Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) is to the doctors. And that means there can be whole episodes where she’s hardly around.

Expect that she’ll fade back into a supporting role once her test results come back, but hopefully she’ll still get featured in at least an episode or two.
