What will happen

Expect Chicago PD to let Voight off the hook within an episode, two at the most, in season 7. And don’t hold your breath for a major change in his character, either.

We saw a very similar scenario to this one play out in last season’s premiere: Voight got himself into trouble for a shooting where he killed someone, earned a suspension, and he was out for all of half an episode. The show won’t take the risk of having him absent for too long, even though that would be the more daring play to make.

With that in mind, it’s unlikely he’ll face anything serious in the new season. Even if Voight’s not the one who shot Kelton (let’s say it’s Antonio given what we now know about his fate), he’s still going to have suspicion to deal with—but his team always ends up forgiving him. And let’s say he did shoot the would-be mayor; the show can’t have its main character locked up for murder.

Plus, Chicago PD is enamored with this idea of Hank Voight as the one-man wrecking crew who will do anything to get justice for the citizens of Chicago, no matter if it’s illegal, immoral or over a line. He’s the hero of the show, in both senses of the word. Thus, the series really doesn’t push as hard as it could in questioning his behavior.

Even without Antonio, Voight already seems to have a new right-hand man ready in Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), so it’ll be business as usual for him. If nothing else, that’ll provide a lot of entertainment for fans, as he goes back to doing what he has done so well for so long.
