What will happen

There will be something going on in Jay Halstead’s personal life, but not what fans might think. As we mentioned in our preview for Hailey Upton, it’s suspicious that Chicago PD‘s official YouTube channel posted an Upstead video after hyping Upzek throughout last season. And their use of the phrase “burgeoning relationship” is telling, too; that’s not how someone describes a friendship or a partnership.

So have the writers been listening to another segment of the fans and they’re going to start some kind of Upstead flirtation in season 7? It certainly looks that way.

That’ll be all kinds of odd for Jay, since he also got romantically involved with his last partner Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) and was prepared to marry her. So what’s going to make him want to try that again with Hailey, considering how things with Erin ended, leaving him broken-hearted? Will he actually be able to move on this time?

Also, Jay will be in charge of Intelligence, but not for very long. Voight can’t be in hot water forever or Jason Beghe wouldn’t be part of the Chicago PD cast anymore. So while Halstead will get to see the view from the top, it’s going to be short-lived. At least his tenure should be without any fights, since he’s not being accused of selling Voight out.

But professionally, once that blows over, Jay should be back to being the reliable detective that we can all count on. That’s where he fits best, although we agree with Voight that someday he’ll make it to being the boss.
