Law and Order SVU season 20 DVD released, with a catch

Law and Order SVU season 20 is now available on DVD, but there’s a huge difference for fans wanting to own the last season of the Dick Wolf drama.

The Law and Order SVU season 20 DVD set has arrived, but Universal Pictures Home Entertainment isn’t making it available through most major retailers.

Fans won’t be able to find the Dick Wolf show’s latest release in stores, and as of today you can’t order a copy through major e-tailers like Amazon, either. So what gives when Olivia Benson and her team have one of the more popular shows on TV?

Season 20 is getting a “manufacture on demand” release. That means it’s not just available on the release date for people to buy; copies are only made when someone specifically orders them.

You can currently only special-order the season through MovieZyng, the online store of DVD manufacturer Allied Vaughn, which is making the sets for Universal. It costs $33 (not including shipping) for the four-disc set.

It might become available through Amazon at a later date, but there’s no official word on that. You can keep reading after the video to find out why the NBC show is being handled this way, and get the details about what’s on the DVD set itself.

DVD releases are a business, just like TV shows; where TV shows have ratings, DVDs have sales figures. As less people buy DVD sets, studios are shifting to MOD models, which minimize their expenses—because they only make as many as they sell.

In plain terms, even with all the millions of SVU fans out there, those fans aren’t buying the DVD releases. So Universal is investing less in the product, while finding a way to still make it available for the viewers who do want it.

It’s not ideal, but at least it’s still getting a physical release.

As for what’s on the SVU season 20 DVD collection? Nothing but the episodes—which is common for these on demand sets, and also for Universal releases. Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD didn’t have any special features either.

Video is widescreen and audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. There is only one audio track (English) while no subtitles are listed for this set. It may be bare, but you can now watch every SVU season 20 hour on DVD.
