What will happen

It’s an almost certain bet that Casey survives when Chicago Fire season 8 starts, since the show signed Jesse Spencer to a contract extension for this season. It would make zero sense to pay him and then kill off his character in the first episode. Plus, given that he’s the show’s co-lead, he’s not someone you get rid of unless the actor decides he wants to leave.

The writers pretty well covered Casey grieving over Dawson’s departure last season, so expect that they move him forward this season. Him potentially hooking up with Brett will still very much be on the table, and that’s not something that will be resolved in the season premiere. That’s the kind of thing they can drag out for suspense in more than one episode.

He should get more scenes with Severide, now that they live together, in an Odd Couple sort of way. Expect some comic relief out of that.

Around the firehouse, he’ll have to continue to lead the group, especially if someone else doesn’t make it through the first episode. People look to Casey not only because of his rank but because he sets such a great example, and he’ll be the one people will lean on.

Oh, and because it wouldn’t be a  Chicago Fire season without it, he’ll probably have some other scary experience before the end of the season. He’s not going to die but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had fun letting him come close.
