What should happen

Just about anything in Chicago Med season 5 would be better for Will than where he is now. The guy doesn’t have much, through no fault of his own. All he was ever trying to do was something good, which is what makes his current predicament so frustrating.

Because of that, we’re going to go out on a limb here: Will should get a new love interest. Chicago Med is sticking with Natalie and Phillip at least for the near future according to recent spoilers, so if she can be happy with someone else and flaunt it at the hospital, why can’t he? It obviously isn’t going to be long-term, but there could be a good short-term arc here.

As long as it doesn’t turn into what happened in season 2 (where Will broke poor Dr. Nina Shore’s heart by admitting he really still wanted Natalie), there’s a possibility for a decent story. Will could find someone to make him happy and help him work through his issues at his own pace, instead of how Natalie kept pushing him to open up to her. And whoever that is, could even part with him as a new friend, even if they’re not meant to be together romantically.

Will also needs to step into the shoes of Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell). With Connor gone, the show needs a doctor who’s going to push the status quo and not take anyone’s crap. Will has been a lot more mature since the first season, and he’s got the self-confidence to be that loud voice in the room. No one can ever replace Connor, but somebody ought to carry the torch of being the guy who stands out, and Will’s ready for that.
