Before the Law and Order SVU season 21 premiere, here’s everything that fans need to know about the upcoming season of the Dick Wolf series.

Law and Order SVU returns on Thursday, Sept. 26—and before it does, we’re giving viewers all of the details so you’re prepared for SVU season 21.

The Dick Wolf drama is entering the history books this fall as the longest-running drama series in TV history. As such, fans can expect a lot of promotion for that accomplishment, in the same way that NBC highly touted the show reaching the 20-year mark last season.

But things aren’t staying the same this season; far from it.

There have been two major changes this summer. Philip Winchester was not brought back as Peter Stone; his last episode was the season 20 finale, in which Stone abruptly decided to resign from the District Attorney’s Office.

More from Dick Wolf

As of this writing, there has not been a new ADA cast to replace Peter Stone for season 21.

Also not returning this season is showrunner Michael Chernuchin (Chicago Justice). Chernuchin was moved to a producing role on Dick Wolf’s CBS series FBI, where he’ll work with Chicago PD‘s Rick Eid.

Replacing him is another longtime Law & Order veteran, Warren Leight, who returns to Special Victims Unit after previously being showrunner from 2011-2016. Leight also spent five seasons on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

For his second go-around with SVU season 21, Leight has big plans. The season premiere, titled “I’m Going To Make You A Star,” is clearly inspired by the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

According to NBC’s official description, the case of the week features an actress who “accuses a high-powered media mogul of attempted rape.” Said mogul is played by Ian McShane (Deadwood), while Zuleikha Robinson (The Lone Gunmen) and Jamie Gray Hyder (Graceland) guest star.

Peter Gallagher also reprises his role as Deputy Chief William Dodds.

The season also includes big changes for all four of the show’s returning main characters. Leight told TVLine that three of those changes will have happened by the end of the season premiere.

SVU season 21 premieres Sept. 26 at 10 p.m. on NBC. Watch an official first look at the new season in the video below.
