Chicago Med season 5: What to watch for in the new season
3) The new surgeon
As Connor leaves, Chicago Med season 5 will be introducing a new trauma surgeon, Dr. Crockett Marcel (played by Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD alum Dominic Rains). And his arrival is much bigger than just bringing in a new character.
Fans will want to compare Crockett to Connor immediately, because on the surface, Crockett does come off as a Dr. Rhodes wannabe. Both are trauma surgeons, although Connor went on to train as a cardiothoracic surgeon, too. Both are handsome doctors. Their first names are even vaguely similar! So it could come across as Chicago Med aiming to literally replace Connor.
But that’s not going to happen. Colin Donnell was one of the anchors of the show, and no one is going to be able to straight-up replace him. So the question becomes, how is Crockett going to be different from Dr. Rhodes? What storylines will the writers give him to prove he’s not a carbon copy, and also demonstrate that he’s worth the fans’ time?
What the show does need this season is someone who’s going to push the status quo the way that Connor did, and not be afraid to speak up about what’s happening around the hospital or if something is wrong. Crockett could distinguish himself if he’s willing to speak up and not fall in line—but only if it’s genuine, and not rebelling for the sake of being a rebel. He could be great, or he could not, and it all comes down to how he’s written.
