Chicago Med’s season premiere proved it’s Never Going Back To Normal. Find out what happened in our Chicago Med season 5, episode 1 recap.

The Chicago Med season premiere did not disappoint in the drama department! Keeping with the same level of tension as last season, “Never Going Back To Normal” tied up all of last season’s big questions.

It also introduced a new doctor, Dr. Crockett Marcel (played by Dominic Rains), who immediately made his presence felt in the Emergency Department.

And the episode said goodbye to two characters—one in fairly shocking fashion. It’s an episode that will have effects on the series for the remainder of its lifetime.

Read on for our recap of “Never Going Back To Normal.”

Will and Natalie

The biggest storyline in the premiere was what happened to Will and Natalie. The episode picked up immediately where last season left off, with Will (Nick Gehlfuss) carrying her into the Emergency Department where new doctor Crockett Marcel took over her care.  Although, within the context of the show, Marcel wasn’t actually new; he’d been working the night shift this whole time.

Will was more worried about his ex than himself, and then there was Phillip (returning guest star Ian Harding), who referred to himself as Natalie’s fiance. Except nobody else remembered her accepting his proposal. Marcel was promptly suspicious of Phillip, who continued to get weirder with every episode he shows up in.

Eventually Natalie was admitted to an intensive care room, and Will came to visit her – only to get into a confrontation with Phillip. “You realize you’ve done nothing but ruin my life?” the other man insisted, before once again claiming that he and Natalie were engaged. And the engagement ring was on her finger—but Marcel pointed out that it hadn’t been there when Natalie was brought in. Phillip had clearly put it there after the fact, and was thus lying.

Chicago Med finally had Natalie regain consciousness in the final 20 minutes of the episode. But she was completely lost as to anything that had happened. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury, and didn’t remember accepting any marriage proposal. But asking Phillip didn’t help that at all, while a mopey Will left the not so happy couple alone.
