Chicago Med season 5 premiere recap: Never Going Back To Normal
April, Ethan and Maggie
Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) found out early on that she was not pregnant. They then took on the case of a young boy with vision loss. Dr. Sam Abrams (recurring guest star Brennan Brown) came in for a consult and deduced he had a tumor. But just as the kid was being prepped for surgery, Choi realized that they might have misdiagnosed him.
He ordered new blood work, which confirmed it was actually something totally different: hypothyroidism, treatable with medication. Well, that was almost a huge mistake. And Chexton agreed they’d talk about having a kid “someday.”
Meanwhile, on his wedding night, Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) came into work to see Will and Natalie but got drafted to treat an 18-year-old who was found wandering around naked. He seemed possibly schizophrenic, but his grandmother (guest star Kathy Baker) didn’t want to hear the suggestion that Cameron was “crazy.”
Charles had to work with Marcel to help both the patient and his grandma. Eventually, he was able to convince her that it was schizophrenia and that she’d be able to face it. Then he got back to his honeymoon.
And Maggie Lockwood’s (Marlyne Barrett) mammogram came back showing a mass, requiring that she submit to a biopsy. She did have cancer, but was insistent that she wanted to keep working while being treated at another hospital. So Chicago Med season 5 began with an awful lot of bad news, but it can only go up from here, right? Right?!
