Chicago Med alum Mekia Cox has been cast as a new series regular in ABC’s cop drama The Rookie; here’s when she’ll make her Rookie season 2 debut.

Mekia Cox didn’t return for the Chicago Med season 5 premiere, but One Chicago fans will soon be able to see her every week on The Rookie.

It was reported by Deadline on Wednesday that the actress, who recurred on Chicago Med as Dr. Robin Charles, is coming aboard the ABC series as a new main cast member. Her first episode airs Sunday, Oct. 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Cox will play Detective Nyla Harper, who’s returning to the rank-and-file of the Los Angeles Police Department after a four-year undercover stint.

Harper becomes the new training officer for John Nolan (series star Nathan Fillion), replacing Talia Bishop. Bishop was written out of the series after actress Afton Williamson decided not to return for The Rookie season 2.

One Chicago fans were hoping that Mekia Cox would make a guest appearance in the Chicago Med premiere, which saw Robin’s ex Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) leave the hospital. There was hope that the former couple would reunite as part of Connor’s farewell.

While that didn’t happen, Robin will be seen at some point during Chicago Med season 5, since her parents remarried in the season 4 finale.

Whether or not she’ll reappear after that will likely depend on Cox’s schedule now that she’s once again a series regular on another show. She was previously named a main cast member on ABC’s Once Upon A Time, and before she played Robin, was a regular during the second season of the network’s Secrets and Lies.

The latter also starred Chicago Fire actor Charlie Barnett, as well as Eric Winter, who’s now one of the stars of The Rookie.

This is another chance to see Mekia Cox on our TV screens on a weekly basis, and again in a much different role than that of Dr. Robin Charles. While hopefully we’ll get an update on Robin (and also potentially Connor) when she returns to the hospital, it’s also excellent that Mekia is getting this next opportunity.
