Marcel and April
Marcel is doing party tricks for the nurses in the Emergency Department, so April is not thrilled to be working with him for the day. She tells Choi, who admits Marcel “strikes me as someone who doesn’t take things seriously.” Amen.
A woman named Nicole comes into the department with her newborn baby that she just self-delivered in the back seat of her own car. Once things have stabilized, the duo try to help Nicole, who refuses to be examined by a doctor. That’s a red flag for April, but Marcel doesn’t think it matters. April threatens to call DCFS, and points out that Nicole’s injury is on the wrong hand—her story doesn’t match up.
The DCFS rep arrives, but Marcel has given Nicole a sedative off-screen. April thinks he did it on purpose because he didn’t agree with her, and tells him to stay out of her way. The duo move on to another case of a woman whose uterus has been cut open – it’s clear that Nicole stole someone else’s baby! While April tells all to the police, Marcel orders the first time Chicago Med has used the hybrid OR since the exit of Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell).
When Maggie can’t handle the surgery, April scrubs into the hybrid OR. The procedure finishes off-screen and Chicago PD‘s Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) explains that Nicole had recently lost her own child to leukemia and the woman they just saved is her co-worker. April cringes when Nicole says “tell [the baby] I’ll come for him as soon as I can.”
The baby is reunited with her actual mother, though one of the other nurses tells April why Marcel actually gave Nicole the drugs. It’s because he had Nicole’s blood tested; he did believe April earlier in the episode! Of course, the show ruins this moment of her realization by then having the other nurse shallowly ask if Marcel is seeing anyone. Really?
