Charles
Dr. Charles’ day gets off to a tough start when Caroline (returning guest star Paula Newsome) takes a hard fall in their kitchen. He takes her to the hospital, where she’s diagnosed with a broken wrist by Dr. Lanik (returning guest star Nate Santana).
Caroline wants surgery so she can be healthy in time to finish a surprise for Robin’s birthday, but everyone warns her that surgery isn’t a good idea with her compromised immune system. This infuriates Caroline, who tells her husband that her real issue is that “time is precious and I don’t want to spend four weeks not being able to use my hand.”
She’s clearly upset, and when he tells her that she may be acting reckless and selfish, she retorts that it’s her choice and walks away. But in the end, Caroline decides not to have the surgery and tells Charles not to mess up her Baked Alaska.

Maggie
Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) is not happy that a new nurse named Paula has been brought in to “shadow” her. She knows that the development will cast suspicion as to why she needs someone following her around. But Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) doesn’t care.
Paula is super-perky and enthusiastic, but Maggie couldn’t care less and sends her off to do menial work just to get her to go somewhere else. It doesn’t take long for Doris to be quizzing Maggie about her “lackey” in that tone of voice like she’s caught her doing something. Maggie blows her off and sends Paula to get coffee.
When Marcel opens the hybrid OR, that means Maggie has to scrub in for a risky procedure to try and repair the pregnant woman’s uterus. She can’t get through the surgery and runs into the bathroom, where Paula finds her in tears. Unfortunately, Maggie turns on her when she tries to help, lecturing her about having an “insanely inflated” sense of her capabilities. It’s not a good look, and Paula stands her ground, leaving Maggie to cry.
After that, Goodwin confronts Maggie, who agrees to move her treatment to Chicago Med and asks April to start training to take over her hybrid OR duties permanently.
