Chicago PD promoted Vanessa Rojas to Intelligence in Familia. Find out what happened in our Chicago PD season 7, episode 3 recap.

This week’s Chicago PD was all about Vanessa Rojas, as the character we met last week was now part of the Intelligence Unit team.

Wednesday’s episode “Familia” put the focus almost entirely on Rojas (Lisseth Chavez), who made a huge mistake in the opening of the hour but then also ended up becoming the hero at the end of it.

Meanwhile, her arrival on the scene also prompted one of the show’s existing partnerships to go bust, as Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) decided that Rojas needed a very specific partner.

The rookie mistake
Vanessa Rojas arrives for her first day at the 21st District. She’s greeted by Trudy Platt (Amy Morton), who gives her the usual hard time. As Platt is chewing Rojas out for critizing her new undercover name, Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is coming downstairs, and he swoops in to save Rojas by taking her out for coffee.

But they see a woman being attacked outside of the coffee shop, and are forced to spring into action. Rojas, like the new girl she is, goes gung-ho chasing the suspect vehicle by herself. She’s easily outnumbered, with the driver speeding off after causing another accident and the passenger fleeing on foot. Unfortunately for him, he falls over a fence and impales himself on rebar. “The whole thing is a mess, Sarge,” Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) explains, and he’s so right.

The rest of the team shows up to try and sort it all out. Voight criticizes Rojas’s choice not to call for backup, since it ended up maming the situation much worse. Meanwhile, Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) reveals to the audience that Antonio Dawson (an unseen Jon Seda) is moving to Puerto Rico, where he’ll presumably reunite with his sister Gabriela.

That’s not the only bad news: Voight thinks Rojas needs a better minder, so he busts up the Upstead partnership to send Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) to ride with Vanessa. He explains as much to Upton when she asks him why she’s being separated from a partner she has success with. “It’s always better to find the right person before they learn the wrong habits,” he says.
