Wednesday’s crossover event is called “Infection,” and it won’t come as a shock to seasoned fans that it affects one of the main characters. Almost every One Chicago event has at least one of the series regulars in trouble, and this time around it’s Chicago PD‘s Hailey Upton.

“Upton gets put in quarantine,” Tracy Spiridakos revealed, “and she meets a young girl that’s also in quarantine, and they develop a bond and try to help each other through it. So that’s kind of fun.”

This is the first crossover appearance for Chicago Med‘s Dominic Rains and Chicago PD‘s Lisseth Chavez, both of whom just joined the franchise this season. For both actors, it was a challenge to adjust to the huge, collaborative format.

“The thing is that we were shooting our episode and also shooting different episodes,” Lisseth laughed. “[I was] getting to know about the different characters I wasn’t familiar with. I’m like okay, so who’s—what’s going on?”

“I came in thinking I found a rhythm to my character only to realize oh wow, I’ve got a long way to go,” said Dominic. “There’s been a giant learning curve for me. There’s three teams and I’m so used to the Chicago Med team. That’s my quote-unquote family, right? So they know me, I know them. There’s a flow, there’s a rhythm, so on and so forth.

“Now here I am—take that same person, they’re landing in PD, they’re landing in Fire, and those have their own rhythm. Those have their own kind of feel to it. And so it was interesting working with those directors, working with that crew, because here’s an energy to that. It percolates something else up. So hopefully at the end of it, that colored my part in the piece nicely and I hope they were happy with what they got. But it was such a delightful, tiring experience.”

While Chicago Med actress Torrey DeVitto described the One Chicago event as “predominantly PD,” with the hospital “basically the site of people being treated,” she wants fans to know that the crisis they’re about to see isn’t made up for TV.

“It is not made up at all,” she told us, with her co-star Nick Gehlfuss adding, “That [plot] is rooted in medicine.”

“It was just very zombie-like,” Torrey added. “Which was interesting. I was letting my imagination run wild on set. I was like, ooh, what if we all became zombies?”

Maybe that’ll be the plot of the next One Chicago crossover.
