Chicago Med‘s Sharon Goodwin

Chicago Med’s hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) didn’t get her hands dirty during the One Chicago crossover, but she had an important role in another way. She became the face of not just the hospital, but the combined force of our One Chicago heroes as they tried to fight the infection.

While everyone else was saving lives and working to catch Seldon during the crossover, Goodwin was dealing with all of the public and political flack that came with a city-wide crisis. She was the only person viewers saw issuing a statement (actually more than one) to the hordes of media that gathered outside Chicago Med. She had to wrangle one of the Mayor’s aides, who tried to insinuate that she’d take the blame if things went wrong.

Goodwin also dealt with blowback from a poorly edited news clip, which excerpted just part of what she had said during a press conference and made her look terrible. Despite all of this noise, she still kept the hospital running smoothly, and was making tough calls like sending Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) home when they needed everyone they could possibly get to help.

She worked in tandem with Dr. Charles, and coordinated with both Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) and Voight to ensure everyone was on the same page. And it was Goodwin who called in the CDC, bringing in Dr. Danover, who helped to find a cure for the bacteria.

As if that wasn’t enough, Goodwin got to deliver the epilogue to “Infection.” She wrapped up the One Chicago event neatly through a voiceover explaining everything that had been learned over the three hours. That could have been any character, but the writers chose Goodwin, and S. Epatha Merkerson brought it home smoothly, making audiences feel like everything was okay again.

While the One Chicago crossover featured scenes for just about everybody, the three episodes had some characters that were head and shoulders above the rest. Without Goodwin, Cruz, Jay and Will Halstead, and Upton, this story would have ended a lot differently.
