Chicago PD season 7 just rekindled Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess’s romance, but here’s what Chicago PD must fix if Burzek is going to work this time.

Burzek is back, and Chicago PD fans couldn’t be more thrilled. When Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) went home together at the end of last week’s One Chicago crossover, it was the realization of many viewers’ hopes and dreams since season 5.

But are the writers really going to put Burgess and Ruzek back together, or is this another tease? Fans have been let down by the show before when it comes to this ship—so if the producers are serious about reigniting Burzek again, there are a couple of things that they need to fix, in order to make the relationship as good as the characters (and the viewers) deserve.

Click through our slideshow to see 5 ways Chicago PD can make Burzek work during season 7. Be sure to let us know what you think about the future of their relationship in the comments at the end of this article.

1) Slow things down and get to overdue milestones

Let’s face it: Chicago PD took Kim and Adam’s relationship from 0-100 in the matter of a season the first time around, so this time they could stand to slow things down and get to some of the things they never did before. Maybe actually having that dinner date mentioned in season 3’s “A Dead Kid, a Notebook and a Lot of Maybes” could be a start. Burgess has her own apartment now, so they would definitely have a place to do said dinner if they didn’t want to go out on the town.

While the “taking it slow” approach would work in favor of Kim’s character, the writers would need to figure out a way to make it fit into Adam’s fast-lane attitude. When it comes to women, Adam’s been one to jump straight into bed. But his attitude towards the job lately has been more serious and committed, so maybe the writers could work that change into his personal life too. If anyone’s due to have a loyal, worthwhile relationship with Adam, it would be Kim.

Another option would be to have their parents finally meet each other. Fans may not remember that they attempted that in the Chicago PD season 3 episode “Looking Out for Stateville,” but it ultimately led to their breakup. Back in season 3, Adam didn’t seem ready to take that step with Kim, but perhaps now that his loyalties have changed and he has matured some, it could work.

Besides, “Disco Bob” (Jack Coleman) knows of Burgess as a police officer, but not as his son’s fiancé; and Kim’s sister Nicole (Jules Willcox) met Adam twice: once at her ex-husband’s birthday party — which was shown offscreen — and the second time was when she came to visit Kim in “A Little Bit of Light.”

Granted, while Nicole and Adam’s second interaction wasn’t great (she hated him for ruining the engagement to her sister), at least Adam met someone in Kim’s family. It’s just unfortunate that it wasn’t her mom. Adam’s even met Trudy Platt’s (Amy Morton) father before, and they were on a fake date in season 1! There are plenty of things Burzek ought to get to, that would cement their status as a serious couple and move them forward.
