3) Don’t rush into another engagement

Although Chicago PD fans would love to see Burzek get their happily ever after again, it would be all too easy for them to fall into the same fast paced romance that doomed them the first time. It might sound exciting for the writers to throw back in there, but for things to really last between Adam and Kim, they should wait before getting engaged a second time.

Based on Adam’s track record—the aforementioned three broken engagements—it’s safe to say the previous approach hasn’t worked out. If he pops the question to Burgess again, it has to mean something, not just be proposal number four because fans want it or the Chicago PD writers want to throw in a surprise this season.

Another reason for Burzek to not get engaged in Chicago PD season 7 is to allow themselves time to process their new places in life. When Adam and Kim first got together, they were completely different people. She was still on patrol and he was still a “rookie” in Intelligence. When Burgess made the transition up into Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) unit, Ruzek promptly took off undercover to get away from his feelings surrounding his ex being promoted upstairs.

Then when he returned in “Favor, Affection, Malice, or Ill-Will,” the writers threw in a kiss—that, like their previous one-night stand, didn’t go anywhere. That was a disappointment for the fans, and the characters deserve more, too. So to avoid a repeat scenario, instead of just getting back together and rushing full speed ahead, why don’t the writers let things evolve organically? It’s not like Burzek fans are going anywhere.

Plus, their last breakups were emotionally rough. Kim experienced such a tragic end to her last relationship with Blair Williams (Charles Michael Davis); and Adam ended his fling with Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), it’d be weird if they were ready to make a permanent commitment (or a promise for that commitment) so soon. There are too many questions first.

Can Kim learn to trust in Adam again as more than just a colleague? Can Adam keep a substantial relationship going? These are things Chicago PD could explore without needing to have Burzek make some big life change like an engagement. Remember how chaotic it got for Trudy when she was engaged to Randall “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte)? Neither Burgess nor Ruzek need more chaos in their life; the writers need to not rush them to the finish line.
