Chicago Fire midseason finale recap: Best Friend Magic
Chicago Fire’s midseason finale Best Friend Magic had a hookup and a huge accident. Find out what happened in our Chicago Fire season 8, episode 9 recap.
This week’s Chicago Fire was one more big installment for Dawsey fans and one last shoutout to Otis.
Wednesday’s episode “Best Friend Magic” included the return of Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund), who wanted to rekindle things with ex-husband Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) even though she had no plans to come back to Chicago.
Meanwhile, Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) stumbled across something that belonged to his former best friend, and set out on a mission to fix it that left us crying more than the Dawsey story.

A Dawsey reunion
It’s a normal day at Firehouse 51 until Casey spots a familiar face standing at Otis’s memorial: it’s Dawson. He immediately goes out to see her and ask what she’s doing there. She tells him she came directly to the firehouse, as she wanted to see…well, we presume it’s him but there’s an alarm that cuts her off. Dawson watches as her friends drive away, with Casey now clearly distracted.
Truck 81 arrives on the scene of a guy trying to climb his way up the side of a high-rise. How are they going to get him down? Casey has his team get above the genius, and after another brief flub from Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) pulls the man inside whether he wants to go or not. And now it’s Casey who’s slipping, ready to leave before the cleanup is entirely done, just so he can get back to Dawson.
Chicago Fire then cuts back to the Office of Fire Investigation, where Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) has found another case to sink his teeth into. He’s found similarities between a burned-down strip mall and another strip mall fire he worked three years earlier, which makes him think that the wrong person was convicted of arson. Van Meter is still not happy as he lets Severide and Wendy Seager (returning guest star Andy Allo) chase their new lead.
Dawson is already regaling her former coworkers with stories by the time Truck 81 returns to the house. The crew decide to give Dawson and Casey some alone time, so that she can tell him she’s in town after being drafted to attend a fundraiser. That naturally means she needs a date, and she doesn’t mean Antonio, who’s now working in the Bahamas.
She wants Casey to come with her; he asks for time to think about it, though what thinking does he need to do when he’s already clearly stumbling over himself about her?
