What’s next

Since Chicago Med had Ben’s health improve in the fall finale, presumably the second half of the season will be about them continuing to pursue their romance. Hopefully, the writers use this to actually flesh out the relationship and show us why we should care about it. If they do what they did to Caroline, and pull us along only to have Ben get sick and die in a few episodes or by the end of the season, it’s going to feel really cheap.

And the focus needs to go back to Maggie, and to the characters around her who are supposed to be this close-knit family that supports her. We’ve seen a few scenes between Maggie and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta), but not as many as we could while April’s been dealing with her own love life. What about more scenes between Maggie and Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), who’s another underused character? We could develop their friendship more.

If Ben’s going to be around, he could recover and help take care of Maggie now, instead of the other way around that we just saw. He’s presumably been fighting cancer longer than she has, so he could be the sounding board that she needs, especially with Caroline probably going to have passed away by the time the show returns. There’s material there for some very good discussions and heartfelt scenes about what it means to live with cancer.

Maggie’s about a lot more than who she’s dating, and that relationship is underdeveloped as it is. The next episodes need to develop her storyline in both respects, and if they do, we could see her arc turn into something very powerful and emotional.
