What it means

Obviously, the big questions surrounding Burgess when Chicago PD season 7 returns is what she will choose to do with her pregnancy. In that sense, fans are taking the journey right along with Kim, because our questions are her questions: Will she keep the baby? How will her pregnancy affect her job? Does she need to tell anyone other than Ruzek about the situation?

Depending on how long the show plays this out, she’ll get further along in her pregnancy and either people will notice or she’ll display behavior that will require an explanation—like if she gets nauseous on duty, or hesitates running into a situation because of the baby.  It’d be easy to see how she’d have no choice but to reveal her pregnancy, which would potentially have her put on desk duty (especially given how Intelligence is about five times more hazardous than a normal police job).

That, in turn, generates a second question for viewers about what that would mean for Kim’s role on the show. Burgess is already not getting enough screen time with the writers giving more of it to Upton, and then now also trying to get fans to like Rojas. If she’s stuck behind a desk, then that would be even less we see of her.

Or the show could have her come back around to getting rid of the baby, but that’s a very delicate subject it’ll have to be careful with. And past that, how about some stories for Kim that are about her continued growth as a cop, and not just her love life? There was that rumor she might take the detective’s exam this season. Maybe.
