Chicago PD season 7 midseason report: Kim Burgess
What’s next
Some Chicago PD fans have complained about the show looking like it has a bias toward Upton, and they’re not wrong. It may not be intentional, but Burgess has been terribly underused during this season, between many of the bigger moments going to Upton and now to Rojas. And that’s really unfortunate because Marina Squerciati is an original cast member.
If anything, once Sophia Bush left the series, she should have become the female lead. And she had some great material in season 5. But particularly this season, she feels like she’s in a distant third place. Especially when one of the characters who’s getting more to do than her just joined the show a few episodes ago.
The series can rectify that in the back half of this season easily, and hopefully they’ve noticed the disparity in screen time and will rectify it. They also have to decide what to do about the baby, and there’s really no clear answer for that.

Burgess having an abortion would be a tough storyline to watch. Burgess keeping the baby would limit her screen time even further and present another issue with her becoming a mother. She could also give the baby up for adoption, but that’s still going to create short-term concerns with Kim being pregnant the rest of this season and trying to keep working.
Chicago PD has painted Kim into a corner her in a couple of respects. But there’s plenty of time to give her more to do in the rest of the season, to get the Burzek relationship right this time, and to figure out what role she’ll play in the new dynamic of the Intelligence Unit.
