Chicago PD season 7 midseason report: Hank Voight
What’s next
Expect at least one Voight-centric episode when Chicago PD returns. There’s one every season and we haven’t seen it yet in season 7.
Also, where are Voight’s entanglements with Walker and Crawford going—and how long until he gets caught between the middle of them in a way he can’t get out of? He’s playing both sides, as he confers with the superintendent while also forming this alliance with a criminal, and they’re too opposite for these two arrangements not to pull him in opposite directions at some point.
Particularly with Crawford, this feels like deja vu. This is the third time now Chicago PD has given us Voight as a sort of mitigating force, having a subplot where he has to deal with some higher-up and their own agenda. First it was Denny Woods (Mykelti Williamson), then Kelton and his sidekick Katherine Brennan (Anne Heche), and now Crawford.
And frankly, this is getting boring. Is there any white shirt in the CPD that doesn’t get mixed up with Voight for one reason or another? There’s an entire police department and yet all of these folks end up on Voight’s doorstep like he’s some sort of savior. But that’s the attitude Chicago PD has with him—ultimately, he’s the boss, in every sense of the phrase.
The show needs to take him down a few pegs. And maybe let him get back to doing more hands-on work himself, instead of just issuing orders and playing political games. Voight is the character this series revolves around but it seems like there’s something else that hasn’t dropped yet with him.
