Click through the below slideshow as we look at Chicago PD season 7 as it relates to Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), starting with:

What’s happened so far

Kevin Atwater’s luck only marginally improved in this season; he’s still a ridiculously underused character, except that he might or might not have a subplot developing.

Atwater’s scenes were relatively limited in a few of the first nine episodes, and when he did get more screen time, it was fulfilling one of the two functions that the Chicago PD writers have firmly established for him: going undercover or dealing with a race-related issue. Otherwise, he was the supporting player continuing to help close cases or prop up other people’s storylines.

His biggest episode came early in the season with “Assets” where he went undercover trying to bust drug dealer Darius Walker (recurring guest star Michael Beach). But all of his work technically was for naught, as Darius didn’t actually get put away; instead, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) cut a deal that kept him out of prison in exchange for being a confidential informant.

That episode also introduced Atwater to another undercover cop, Vanessa Rojas (Lisseth Chavez), who joined the Intelligence Unit afterward. Chicago PD executive producer Rick Eid has said that the show is “writing toward” a romance between Atwater and Rojas, but there haven’t been any personal scenes between them in the episodes since she joined the team.
