What’s next

Everyone knows what will happen when Chicago Med returns: April will have to tell Choi about her infidelity, and her early onset menopause diagnosis, and that relationship may just break (as it was already on thin ice). That’ll be disappointing, as remember that they were broken up during most of season 4, so this will be the second go-around on that subject if they part company.

It’s possible that April could only tell Choi one thing and lie about the other, but that would be even worse, because it’s TV common sense that the thing she doesn’t disclose will come out later, and then he’ll be even more upset with her for lying. So however you slice this, it will not turn out well for Choi, April or Chexton fans.

Once that’s resolved, there are some choices ahead for Ethan. Did Chicago Med just have him go away on that deployment to enable the whole April kissing Marcel scene? Or is there a story there we’re going to see unfold—something he saw or experienced there that affected him? It would be great if it were the latter, and we get a story for Choi that has no connection to his love life.

Plus, how is Choi going to react to Marcel? Usually, both on TV and in life, we see the person who has been cheated on blame the other man/woman almost more than their significant other. But April initiated the kiss with Marcel. So will Choi take his frustration out on Crockett, too? Will we have a contretemps brewing there?

The irony is, Choi vs. Marcel actually isn’t a bad idea—on a professional. Marcel is a loose cannon, and not in a positive way. He often comes across as self-serving, condescending, and breaking the rules because he can (though that’s a writing issue more than anything). Choi, coming from the military, is all about rules; the episode with the Army reinforced that. So if anyone can yank Marcel back into line it’s Choi.

And we haven’t had two doctors with a rivalry since the early days of Connor Rhodes vs. Will Halstead. So why not allow a professional tension to brew, instead of a personal one? That would be so much more entertaining, and constructive, than another love triangle.
