Chicago Fire season 8’s most WTF moments
From personnel changes to just plain surprises, Chicago Fire has had some unbelievable moments. Here are Chicago Fire season 8’s most WTF moments.
Chicago Fire season 8 has been off to a fast start, flooring fans with some big reveals. But what have been the most surprising or shocking developments so far?
In nine episodes, the show has included the death of a character, the arrival of a new one, and the burning of random furniture to make a public statement. It’s hard to believe those things are just the start of an unbelievable season to date.
And every show has those moments that throw fans for a loop—either because they don’t seem to make sense or we don’t see them coming.
Click through this slideshow as we count down the three most shocking or unbelievable things in the current Chicago Fire season, starting with:
3. Carl Grissom’s return
What happened: After Severide figures out yet another arson case, Fire Commissioner Carl Grissom (recurring guest star Gary Cole) puts in paperwork to transfer him to the Office of Fire Investigation—without so much as mentioning this to Severide. Ultimately, Grissom appears in only one scene, where he convinces Kelly to accept the move for the greater good of the Chicago Fire Department.
Why it’s a WTF moment: Occasionally, TV shows’ most confusing moments have nothing to do with the shows themselves—they’re dictated by what goes on, or doesn’t, behind the scenes. The return of Grissom was one such moment.
We’d been getting excited for Grissom to be seen again since before the season started, when executive producer and showrunner Derek Haas teased it in our pre-season interview. And Gary Cole is a fantastic actor. So it felt incredibly anti-climactic that the show would finally have him back, only to use him in a single scene.
However, One Chicago fans know that Cole is also an incredibly busy actor, and so he’s in high demand. That also came up last season, when he was supposed to return earlier than he did, but wasn’t available. He’s a series regular on the new Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish for ABC now, plus the fact that Fire films in Chicago while most other series are shot in other cities certainly doesn’t help.
So from a purely story point of view, it was a head-scratcher to kind of underuse Grissom in his first appearance this season. But when you step back and think about it, we were probably lucky to get Cole just for that one scene.
