2. Burgess’s pregnancy

What happened: Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) hooked up again at the end of this fall’s One Chicago crossover event. A few episodes later, Burgess found out that she was pregnant with Ruzek’s baby, and has yet to decide what she’s going to do with the pregnancy.

Why it’s a WTF moment: While the idea of a Burzek baby has many shippers excited, there are all kinds of issues with how this could play out and how Chicago PD is going to handle it. It’s not just “they’re going to have a baby and get married and live together happily ever after.” Far from that; this could get really difficult, really fast.

Firstly, it’s a plot development that at this moment, feels tacked on. It was big enough news that the show finally got Burgess and Ruzek back together after seasons of teasing it and that detour for Upzek—there was no need to introduce a baby. It’s like the writers felt they needed a big ship moment when they already had one just in the reunion.

Maybe Chicago PD wants to tell a story about having to juggle family with working in this unit, and that’s interesting. But we kind of had that already with Burgess’s former partner Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) being a surrogate parent to his siblings; if the show wanted to go that route it could have done that with Kevin, especially since his brother and sister have been MIA since the fifth season.

For Burgess and Ruzek, it adds more stress and drama to a relationship that just got back on track. Burgess has to decide if she’s going to keep the baby or not, and whatever she decides, it will have an obvious emotional effect on both of them. And if they do become parents, then that’s a ton of other questions. This is a plot twist that feels like we haven’t gotten all the pieces yet, or that it wasn’t entirely figured out.
