What happened to First Responders Live?

First Responders Live brought Dick Wolf to FOX for a different kind of true crime show. But will the series return for season 2 or has it been axed?

The Dick Wolf universe took a new and different turn this summer with First Responders Live, the producer’s first FOX show in several years. But is it going to continue next year or not?

First Responders Live premiered in July, with camera crews following police, paramedics and fire crews in select cities around the United States. Similar to the hit series Live PD, the show brought in a number of experts (including Antoine Lane) to give viewers perspective on what was going on in each location.

When the series debuted it was billed as a real-life version of Wolf’s One Chicago franchise.

But it wasn’t quite as successful as those scripted shows; its ratings were decent but up and down throughout the show’s run, and FOX did move its time slot once during the season, shifting it from Wednesdays to Tuesdays. Usually, when a series moves its time period, that can be a bad sign.

Conversely, the network ordered extra episodes that extended the season from July into August, which is usually a good sign for any TV series.

So what’s really happening with this show? Will we get First Responders Live season 2? FOX has yet to make an official announcement one way or the other. The show isn’t on their midseason schedule, but it could be announced later on, especially since last season didn’t start until June.

At the same time, there’s no shame in saying that the live ratings for the project weren’t as huge as they could have been. It jumped into what’s become a very competitive space; true crime reality shows have become big business. Speaking of Live PD, A&E has stretched that show out into tons of reruns and multiple spinoffs. And that’s just that one show!

Being the only live true crime show on broadcast TV sets the Dick Wolf series apart, but we’ll have to wait to discover if First Responders Live has been renewed or cancelled. This truly could go both ways.
