Hitting a wall

When Adam and Hailey were out on patrol following leads, they got a call about another robbery in progress. When they stormed the scene, they were fired at, and Adam lost sight of the shooter. A few miles down, a man was beating up the offender, and Adam had him drop his gun that he was using for the beatdown. The man’s name was Nick Mirella, and he had stopped the guy from attempting to jack his car.

The masked offender was a kid, maybe 19 or 20. When they were driving to investigate a club sticker from the van that fled the scene. Kevin asked Adam about the baby. He seemed bummed out that Adam wasn’t the one that told him, but still gave his friend some advice. “Just be in it and you’ll be good,” Atwater told Ruzek about fatherhood.

Adam and Kevin went to the bar, and after a lot of convincing, got the bartender to give them the security cam footage. Adam and Kim then visited Nick and asked him to ID a suspect. He did not pick Ben Wilcomb out of the lineup.

When they pressed him, he shut down; he didn’t know the kid was local. His loyalty was to his neighborhood, so he wasn’t going to help them anymore. Since he wouldn’t identify their suspect, Voight ordered Ruzek to pick Nick up on assault for hitting the carjacker over the head with his glock.

Jay and Hank tried to get Nick to talk, he kept saying he didn’t know anything. They tried every tactic in the book, but he still wouldn’t budge. When Nick attempted to call them out, Voight warned him that he doesn’t bluff. He would book Nick into lockup right now if he could. It wasn’t until Hank went on about how family is everything that Nick finally cracked.

He identified Ben Wilcomb as the offender. Intelligence moved on his apartment, ready to get the jump on him, but the apartment was clear. Kim saw Ben in the lobby, and he took off running toward the basement. He knocked Kim down, and he had a gun. Kim tried to talk him through it; to get him to put the gun down. Adam heard Kim’s exchange with Ben, and rushed him from the side. Kim tried to get Adam to back off, but he didn’t. Adam ended up taking Ben out when he raised his gun at him.

Adam told the shooting team his story, and Kim was angry because he only did what he did because she’s pregnant. Kim didn’t want his help; even though that was all Adam wanted to do. “We’re not together, so this doesn’t fall on us the same,” she told him, which left him reeling. He just wanted to do right by her, but they weren’t seeing eye to eye on that.
