Law and Order SVU renewed through season 24 in mega-deal

Law and Order SVU has been renewed for multiple seasons, ensuring that Dick Wolf fans will see at least Law and Order SVU season 24.

Law & Order: SVU will run at least 24 seasons, as NBC handed down a massive three-season order to Dick Wolf‘s longest-running show on Thursday.

Having SVU renewed was part of a new contract that NBCUniversal struck with Wolf to continue their extensive partnership. The deal also included future seasons of all three One Chicago series, and commitments for NBC to order future shows from Wolf.

Special Victims Unit already became the longest-running primetime series in TV history when it started its 21st season last fall. With the additional three seasons, SVU season 24 would seem to ensure no other show will be able to surpass it.

After all, it’s hard enough for most TV series to get to five seasons, let alone the 25 it would take to beat this mark—and that would also be assuming that SVU would end at the conclusion of this order.

It’s entirely possible that the network orders even more episodes when the show is up for renewal again, which should be the spring of 2023.

Certainly the history books had to be in mind for Wolf, who was said to be deeply disappointed when NBC canceled the original Law & Order after 20 seasons—one season shy of beating Gunsmoke to claim the legacy record for itself.

Both Wolf Entertainment and the network have since extensively promoted Special Victims Unit getting to that milestone, both in its 20th season and now in its 21st. The key art for this season specifically touts the show as “TV’s longest-running primetime drama.”

The big question now is whether or not the SVU cast will be willing to return for three more years. With SVU renewed the next step is to negotiate new contracts for the stars, including Mariska Hargitay, who is the unquestioned centerpiece of the show and the only cast member to be part of the entire series.

However, given how closely Hargitay and her character Olivia Benson are associated with SVU, and how highly she’s thought of both on and off screen, it’s hard to think that NBC would have agreed to bring the show back if they didn’t believe Hargitay would come back with it.
