Chicago Med season 5, episode 16 recap: Who Should Be The Judge

Will and Charles

Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) makes a stop at an outpatient detox clinic to check on Dr. Hannah Asher (recurring guest star Jessy Schram), and he’s told to “make it brief” as she just checked in the previous morning. Why he’s bothering, we have no idea, but he is.

And at least Hannah actually is there this time. She’s busy throwing up as she comes down off the high. A concerned Will asks a nurse about her, and the snotty nurse tells him that Hannah isn’t getting any methadone because she’s a doctor. Instead, the facility expects Hannah to quit cold turkey.

Will decides to go back to Chicago Med and ask Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) about this, and by that we mean argue in case of moral relativism. “They’re punishing addicts because of the stigma,” he argues. Charles tries to console him, but he’s not interested.

Coincidentally, Will’s latest patient Krista Butler is one of Dr. Charles’ old patients. What a small world the Chicago Med writers weave. Krista, whom Charles previously diagnosed as schizophrenic, is feeling dizzy and also admits that she’s been off her meds for months. “Never felt better,” she says and we all know that’s either not true or won’t last.

Krista’s mom shows up and goes off on her, which is not in any way constructive. Less than a minute later, Krista has a seizure, or at least that’s what it looks like. Will and Charles talk with her mother, and ask if Mom has been giving Krista her psych meds without her knowledge. Bingo: she has and that’s what caused the not-seizure. Charles informs her that if she doesn’t confess, he’ll tell Krista himself.

So Mom confesses, but also yells at Charles that she “had this under control” and “you ruined her life.” Real mature there.

While Charles eventually consoles mom, Will tries to smuggle suboxone into the detox clinic for Hannah. But she turns him down, saying he’d get her thrown out. She tells him to go, and it turns into her screaming at him to get out, which then creates a whole scene.
