Undercover or bust

Voight and Atwater paid another visit to Frank, to let him in on the recent developments, and tell him that they needed Frank to set up a drug deal to nab Lamar. Frank met up with Lamar to discuss just that, but then veered dangerously off script by asking Lamar if he was sure that JoJo was the killer, therefore implying something was wrong.

Luckily, the heat was off once one of Lamar’s associates noticed Rojas sitting nearby with a camera. He suspected she was a cop, but she played it off by telling him she was just “looking at the sky,” and rebuffed his attempt to hit on her. That failed exchange defused all the tension, and allowed Intelligence to proceed with their faux deal.

Lamar took the bait. He wanted to meet up with Frank and Frank’s friend, played by Atwater, to do the drug deal. Chicago PD then had Frank waiting outside his church for Lamar to show, while the rest of the Intelligence team took up surveillance positions. Everything seemed to be going well, until Lamar tried to kick Frank out of his own church, and Frank’s mouth moved faster than his brain again.

He wasn’t having this, and he and Lamar got into it. Frank punched Lamar, and things got chaotic, with Lamar and his associates viciously assaulting Frank. Staples wanted to go in immediately, but no one else wanted him to, since both a CI and an unarmed cop were inside. Unfortunately, he only listened to them for about 30 seconds, forcing everyone to converge and bust the operation.

While Lamar was arrested, Chicago PD did serve up consequences. The team discovered that the gun found in Lamar’s car was in fact the one that shot Sean Alter, closing the loop on their case. Staples started trying to tell them how to wrap it up, until an angry Voight arrived and informed him that Frank was likely to die before morning thanks to a cracked skull, bleeding on the brain and “all of his ribs” being cracked.

Paul didn’t apologize;  instead he defended his position, insisting that he did things “by the book,” to which Voight replied “Not my book.” When the argument escalated even further, Voight threw a solid punch to his face which sent him to the floor. While Staples dealt with his bloody nose, and Atwater extended a sarcastic hand to tell him how nice it was working with him, Voight stalked into his office and gave another of his moody looks out the window. So much for working together.
